Berliner Tafel e.V., founded as a charitable organisation in Berlin, it is the oldest food bank in Germany. Since 1993, the around 600 active members of Berliner Tafel e.V. collect up to 650 tonnes of donated food each month and pass it on to around 400 social facilities in the capital.
Well over half a million people in Berlin live below the poverty line. One in every five is below the age of 15. The children and young people charity "Die Arche" (the ark) fights to get children off the streets, to provide them with meaningful leisure options and to act against social deficits.
